The tiny-k Early Intervention Staff, Dena Bracciano, Elaine McCullough, Susan Ridenour, Lindsey Cooper, Cassi Vandever-Lund, Jessica Dameron, Molly Rutledge, Kristina Poracsky, and Aña Williams, recently attended 2 worskhops:

On Janaury 17, 2007, our staff and several parents attended the DIR (Developmental, Individual differences, Relationship-based)/Floortime Workshop presented by Jake Greenspan and Tim Bleeker, Co-Directors of DIR Support Services.

This model, based on the work of Dr. Stanley Greenspan, is used to support families whose children are diagnosed with Autism or PDD-NOS, but it can be used with any child. The approach focuses on engagement, communication and interaction, and working on developmental skills through play. To find out more, visit www.dirss.com.

The tiny-k staff also attended a 3-day conference entitled, Implementing Evidence-Based Practices in Early Childhood Intervention: Coaching in Early Childhood presented by M’Lisa Sheldon, Ph.D., PT, and Dathan Rush, M.A., CCC-SLP from North Carolina. This conference was held in Newton, KS on Jan. 29-31, 2007, and was attended by 4 early intervention teams from different parts of Kansas. The focus of this workshop was to learn how to use “coaching” when working with families and children with special needs. This model shifts from a deficits-based approach to a capacity-building approach for families, and is characterized by one person, called the Primary Coach, helping support the family and child. The primary coach assists the learner or learners (parents, relatives, child care providers, others) to recognize learning opportunities within the child’s activities and routines. The rest of the team is available and assists the family and Primary Coach as needed by consulting or conducting co-visits. To find out more about this approach, visit: www.coachinginearlychildhood.org.

Congratulations to Cassi Vandever, our physical therapist, on her marriage to Dave Lund on February 3, 2007. We wish them the best!
